Diversity and Inclusion

01 Dec 2019 03:28

Keen to strengthen the position of women within the cycling family and confirm their status of leaders in the domain, in 2019 the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the UCI World Cycling Centre (WCC) took the necessary steps to obtain EDGE certification.

EDGE (Economic Dividends for Gender Equality) certification is the leading global assessment methodology and business certification standard for gender equality. It examines where organisations stand when it comes to gender balance across the talent pipeline, gender pay equity, creating an effective framework of policies and practices that ensure equitable career flows, and fostering an inclusive workplace culture for both male and female employees.

After being audited by the independent certification body in September 2019, our Federation obtained Edge Assess certification on 23 October 2019.

In obtaining this label, the UCI and the UCI WCC join an international group of organisations and companies that endeavour to offer the same professional opportunities to their female and male staff members. The UCI is the first international sporting Federation to commit to this procedure.

Our aim now is to reach the second level of certification (EDGE Move) within two years.

The certification process being undertaken by our Federation is part of a series of important measures initiated in recent years. Their purpose is to provide governance in which transparency, fairness, representation and respect for individuals are highly valued. They include:

  • Charter of Gender Equality within the UCI administration
  • Charter of Gender Equality for Official Ceremonies at UCI World Championships
  • Recognition of ethical principles by UCI Road Teams
  • Enhanced athlete protection in the UCI Code of Ethics
  • The revision of UCI Statutes, which will allow new requirements to be set for the minimum representation of each gender within the governing bodies of the UCI, Continental Confederations and National Federations.
