A spectacular comeback for Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Pro Team) netted the Italian Champion his second Giro d’Italia victory in four years on Sunday. After a lone mountain top victory on Friday Nibali attacked again on Saturday, dropping the maglia rosa, Colombia’s Esteban Chaves (Orica GreenEdge) and third placed Steven Kruijswijk (Team Lotto NL-Jumbo), who had lost his overall lead Friday after crashing badly.

Chaves finished second overall and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar Team) 3rd.

After four years of existence, the WorldTour-level IAM Cycling Team has confirmed that this will be its last season in the international peloton.

Stage three of the Baloise Belgium Tour was cancelled on Saturday due to a crash.

The UCI WorldTour ranking continues to be led by Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) ahead of Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and Alberto Contador (Tinkoff). Following his Giro d’Italia victory, Vincenzo Nibali has rocketed up the rankings from 46th to fourth overall. Spain and Tinkoff remain in command of the UCI WorldTour nations and teams classifications.

With two stage wins and two second places in the Tour of California, Peter Sagan has increased his lead in the UCI World Rankings (2,283 points) ahead of Nairo Quintana, with 1,420.25 points and Fabian Cancellara (Trek-Segafredo) with 1,417 points. France continues to dominate the UCI World Ranking’s nations classification.

The Critérium du Dauphiné is a prestigious eight-day stage race in south-east France that is considered a key warm-up race for the Tour de France. Nine riders, including defending champion Chris Froome, have won the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Tour de France in the same year - in Froome’s case, twice. (2013 and 2015).

Traditionally very mountainous, this year’s edition is 1,147 kilometres long.

The race started in 1947 by the local Dauphiné Libéré newspaper. Since 2010 it has been organised by ASO. Traditionally very mountainous, this year’s edition is 1,147 kilometres long.

The longest edition of the race was in 1956, with 1,935 kilometres, and the longest ever stage was stage two in 1949, 275 kilometres from Evian to Annecy.

Tejay van Garderen (27) is an American professional cyclist with UCI WorldTour team BMC Racing Team. AGrand Tour and stage race specialist, he is a gifted time triallist. Van Garderen has twice finished fifth in the Tour de France, and last year he finished second overall in the Critérium du Dauphiné.
