UCI Bike Region - Fyn

Fyn is the island situated in the middle of Denmark. Ten municipalities are part of the region, including Bogense and with Odense as the main city. After a round of the 2017-2018 Telenet UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup, the 2019 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships will also be held in Bogense. The region of Fyn, Langeland and Ærø recently launched an ambitious cycling tourism strategy called Bike Island 2020. Its aim is to become the most attractive cycling holiday destination in northern Europe from 2020 and generate additional annual revenues of almost EUR 27 million through cycle tourism. The strategy includes 12 major initiatives aiming at increasing the levels of cycling within the region focus on infrastructure improvements, new tourism partnerships and initiatives, strategic partnerships, as well as targeted communications and branding.

Every year, each of the municipalities on the island of Fyn implements plans focused on improving infrastructure and transport safety. Since 2009, Odense, the largest city in the region, has been working to implement an ambitious traffic and mobility plan to significantly change its infrastructure and increase sustainable modes of transport. From 2009 to 2012, Odense was the official ‘national bike city’ in Denmark and in 2015 it was appointed the country’s number one ‘Bike friendly municipality’. Cycling is a priority for Odense and is included in many action points in the 2017-2024 plan for Mobility and Urban Space, in particular with regard to school children, mountain bike development, safe roads to work and to school, the establishment of new super bike routes and a reduction in bike related accidents.

The region of Fyn also hosts numerous elite and recreational cycling events every year, which include the Fyen Rundt, the Bissen mountain bike race, track cycling events and stages of the Tour of Denmark.
