UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, Papendal, the Netherlands. Record number of participants.

At the opening of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Papendal, the Netherlands (May 6 and 7) Frenchmen Joris Daudet and Sylvain André took one victory each in the Men’s category, while Laura Smulders (NED) delighted her home crowd by winning the Women’s competitions on both days.

The new World Cup format saw a record number of participants compete in back-to-back racing with the top four riders transferring to the next round. André (FRA) scored his first victory in a UCI BMX Supercross World Cup on Saturday, holding off home favourites Dave van der Burg and Twan van Gendt. Laura Smulders showed her current dominance taking the win over first-time podium finishers Yaroslava Bondarenko from Russia and the Netherlands' Judy Baauw.

The following day, Smulders again got the crowd to its feet when she grabbed the holeshot and never looked back for win number two. This time 2016 UCI BMX World Champion Mariana Pajon (COL) and Lauren Reynolds (AUS) joined her on the podium with 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

The final race of the day saw another first time UCI World Cup winner in Joris Daudet, the reigning UCI BMX World Champion. Tory Nyhaug (CAN) moved into second and Olympic Champion Connor Fields (USA) held Niek Kimmann (NED) off for third.

– Focus on Sylvain André –

Sylvain André

French Elite rider and 2010 Junior UCI World Champion Sylvain André took a different approach than usual to the 2017 season, spending three months racing in the USA to prepare for the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup. This resulted in a first ever World Cup win at round one in Papendal for the Wiawis athlete from Aix-en-Provence. Bronze medallist at the 2016 European BMX Championships, André has twice won bronze medals in the time trial at the UCI BMX World Championships (2012 and 2013). His best overall result in the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup was in 2013 when he finished fourth. Last year he was sixth in the overall UCI World Cup ranking and will be looking to better that after a positive start to the 2017 season.
