- What Happened -

UCI BMX Supercross World Cup round three took place on the new Rio-style BMX SX track in Papendal, the Netherands on May 7-8. Once again Tory Nyhaug won the time trial on Saturday making it three out of three so far this season. Caroline Buchanan (AUS) set the fastest time on the clock for the women.

In the Olympic year Maris Strombergs (LAT) won the BMX main race on Sunday, as he did four years ago in Papendal when he went on to win the gold medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games. If this is a sign, the man from Latvia might be on his way to his third consecutive Olympic gold. He showed class and form as he held off David Graf (SUI) and Carlos Ramirez (COL) who finished second and third on a sunny day in the Netherlands.

With many of the Dutch riders injured all eyes were on Laura Smulders (NED) in the Elite Women class to put on a good result. The lady of the TVE team did not disappoint and got the crowd on their feet with her UCI BMX Supercross World Cup win just like she did in 2014. Second place went to Caroline Buchanan (AUS) who has a strong lead in the UCI BMX SX World Cup series. A surprising Manon Valentino (FRA) finished third.

- What you should know about...

UCI BMX SX World Cup Rock Hill, USA

The BMX venue in Rock Hill is called the Novant Health BMX Supercross track, and is the only BMX track in the world with a title sponsor. The facility in South Carolina, which cost close to 8 million US dollars to build, is owned and operated by the city of Rock Hill, SC through its Parks Recreation and Tourism Department. Sport Tourism is a key component in building Rock Hill's premium sport facilities, with money being generated by a hospitality tax on hotels and restaurants in the city. Major BMX events like the UCI World Cup and the 2017 BMX World Championships will bring in sports tourism dollars to the city of Rock Hill.

The BMX track in Rock Hill is supervised by Mike King, former UCI BMX and MTB World Champion, Bicycling and BMX Hall of Fame inductee, and Team USA Olympic BMX Team Director for the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.
