The International Cycling Union (UCI) is extremely saddened by the fatal accident of South African mountain biker Burry Stander.
Stander, who finished 5th at the 2012 Olympic Games cross-country mountain bike event, was killed in a training accident near his home in South Africa on Thursday after a collision with a taxi.
The 25-year-old was the country’s most successful mountain biker, winning the U23 World Championships in Canberra (AUS) in 2009. He went on to become one of the major players on the UCI World Cup circuit, finishing second overall in 2012 and winning the sixth round in Windham (USA).
UCI President Mr Pat McQuaid said that cycling had lost one of its great mountain bike specialists: “Burry Stander was a fantastic athlete who had already achieved a great deal and who was destined to go even further. It is tragic that his career has come to such a brutal end. Our thoughts go to his family at this extremely difficult time.â€
