UCI BMX Supercross World Cup: thrilling end to the season

After earlier stops in Manchester (GBR), Santiago del Estero (ARG) and Papendal (NED) the winner of overall UCI BMX Supercross World Cup was decided at the US Olympic Training Centre in Chula Vista, California

With her win on Saturday, Mariana Pajon (COL) became 2013 World Cup Champion. In the Elite Men's category, Sam Willoughby (AUS) pulled off a blistering race to take honours on Californian soil, while Connor Fields’ (USA) third place was enough to see him crowned 2013 World Cup Champion.

Women: Pajon the winner of the day

Junior rider Felicia Stancil (USA) proved that age was no factor when she won the Time Trials Super Final on Friday. However, in the main event she got the start gate wrong and ruled herself out of contention.

The win went to Mariana Pajon (COL), who passed Alise Post (USA) on the final straight. The Olympic Champion from 2012 takes the 2013 World Cup title.

In the final race of her career, Arielle Martin (USA) finished in sixth place, securing a magnificent second place in the overall 2013 standings. Thailand’s Amanda Carr (3rd) took her first podium spot in a World Cup event.

Men: Willoughby's blistering performance

In the men's main event, Sam Willoughby (AUS) exploded out of the start gate to take the hole shot. Local favourite Connor Fields (USA) and Tory Nyhaug (CAN) chased Willoughby down to the end of the first straight. Nyhaug managed to work himself into second place. During the challenging and exciting second straight it was Willoughby who showed blistering speed. He shook off the competition and never looked back to take his first and only World Cup win of this year.

Fields had to settle for third place, but his consistent performance during the season meant he took the overall UCI BMX Supercross World Cup title for 2013.
