UCI WorldTour : Joaquin Rodriguez received his 2012 trophy

Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) received his trophy for winning the 2012 UCI WorldTour individual ranking from UCI President Pat McQuaid on Monday.

The ceremony took place at Calella (Spain), at the end of the first stage of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. The Catalonia Sports Secretary and the Mayor of Calella were present along with several representatives of the UCI and of the Katusha team.

“I am extremely happy to receive this trophy on my home ground,” declared Rodriguez, who comes from Parets, in the province of Barcelona.

Numerous supporters of the Spanish rider had their photos taken with the 2012 UCI WorldTour trophy. Katusha also showed them the bike that the team’s leader will be riding this season, customised in the UCI WorldTour colours.

Rodriguez topped the UCI WorldTour individual ranking with 692 points, in front of Bradley Wiggins (Sky Procycling), 601 points, and Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma-QuickStep), 410 points.

Professional since 2001, Rodriguez, 33 years old, has a long list of wins behind him, including classics such as Il Lombardia and the Flèche Wallonne (2012), stage races such as the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya (2012), and other placings in major tours (3rd in the Vuelta, 2nd and 4th in the Giro, 7th in the Tour de France).
