Six events, five different countries on the top of the podium : the inaugural evening of the first round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung 2012-2013 at Cali has confirmed that the campaign towards the Rio Olympic Games in 2016 is well and truly under way. All the National Federations have already started the job of rejuvenating their teams to ensure that the best talents get the opportunity to shine in high level competitions over the coming seasons.
Large and enthusiastic, the crowds at the Cali Velodrome enjoyed some particularly exciting moments during the first meeting on Thursday evening, when the highlight was the success of the local Team Pursuit who dominated the final against Russia, and of Fabian Puerta, triumphant in the km against the British competitor Kian Emadi-Coffin and Quentin Lafargue from France.
The third gold medal contested by the men was the Team Sprint, won by Germany, with Japan and Venezuela taking second and third.
For the women, the Team Pursuit was won by Italy in front of the British Welsh Track Team and the Columbians, who secured an excellent third place.
The two other womenâ€™s titles awarded were to Australia, with Isabella King in theÂ Scratch, and to Great Britain, with Rebecca James and Jessica Varnish in the Team Sprint.
The first round of the UCI Tracking Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung, continues until Saturday evening in Cali.
