As part of the United Nations International Day for Persons with Disabilities, the UCI is delighted to look back over an unforgettable year of para-cycling.
Five years after its official integration into the UCI, para-cyclingâs status in the world of sport has reached unprecedented heights.
2012 got under way with a magnificent edition of the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Los Angeles from February 9th to 12th. A highlight of these worlds was the inclusion of the Scratch race for the first time.
The para-cycling season continued with three rounds of the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup. Rome (ITA) provided a spectacular backdrop for the opening round in May, followed by Segovia (ESP) in June and Baie-Comeau (CAN) in July.
But the highlight of the season was the London Paralympic Games from August 30th to September 8th, during which all those athletes who had impressed at the World Championships and World Cups met to battle for the ultimate Paralympic title.
To mark the United Nations International Day for Persons with Disabilities, the International Paralympic Committee has released a short online film âLondon 2012 â Best Games Everâ, featuring spectacular highlights from this summerâs Paralympics, including former racing driver Alex Zanardiâs first Paralympic handcycling win on the Brands Hatch track.
The film ties in with the theme of this yearâs International Day for Persons with Disabilities, âremoving barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all.â
The UCI looks forward to another year rich in great moments for para-cycling in 2013.
