The International Cycling Union (UCI) today published a fictitious ranking for the UCI Women’s Teams in order to establish which teams will receive invitations to participate in the UCI Road Women World Cup and Class WE 1 events for 2012.
This fictitious UCI ranking is based on the accumulated points of the best four riders in each team. Organisers of the World Cup events are required to invite the top 15 teams in this ranking, as well as the top five nations in the nations ranking, to participate in their event, guaranteeing top sporting quality in each round. The organisers of class 1 events must invite the top 10 UCI teams and the first 5 National Federations.
The 2012 UCI Road Women World Cup calendar includes nine events, starting with the Ronde Van Drenthe on 10th March and finishing in France on 25th August with the GP de Plouay-Bretagne.
The World Cup events are among 79 races on the UCI Women Elite Road Calendar, which take place on all five continents. The first event of this calendar, the Ladies Tour of Qatar, will begin on 1st February.
Women’s cycling is growing significantly, with 35 teams registered for 2012 (28 in 2011), including one for the first time in Australia and one in Taipei. These teams comprise a total of 440 athletes. As far as the calendar is concerned, 17 new events have been added, notably in America, Africa and Asia.
