Press release : UCI Congress in Lugano: PAT MCQUAID RE-ELECTED AT THE HEAD OF THE UCI

Description:

The 178th Congress of the International Cycling Union met today in Lugano during the UCI Road World Championships in Mendrisio (Switzerland).

During the Congress, the outgoing UCI President, the Irishman Mr Pat McQuaid, the only candidate as successor, was re-elected for a new term of four years (2010-2013).

The new UCI Management Committee, a part of which was elected by the Congress, is now composed of the following members:

•     Mr Pat McQuaid (IRL) – President *

•     Mr Artur Lopes (POR) – Vice-president *

•     Mr Renato Di Rocco (ITA) – Vice-president *

•     Mr Hee Wook Cho (KOR) – Vice-president

•     Mr Cheikh Faisal Bin Humaid Al Qassimi (UAE) *

•     Mr Joop Atsma (NED) *

•     Mr Mohamed Wagih Azzam (EGY)

•     Mr Brian Cookson (GBR) *

•     Mr Mohamed Jamel Louafi (TUN) *

•     Mr Peder Pedersen (DEN) *

•     Mr José Manuel Pelaez (CUB)

•     Mr Mike Plant (USA) *

•     Mr Fritz Ramseier (GER) *

•     Mr Mike Turtur (AUS)

After the Congress, the Management Committee met for the first time with its new composition. It elected its Vice-presidents, and appointed members of the UCI Commissions. The Road, Track, Mountain Bike, BMX, Cyclo-cross and Para-cycling Commissions will be presided respectively by Messrs Joop Atsma, Mike Turtur, David Lappartient, Abe Schneider, Brian Cookson and Louis Barbeau. The composition of all the Commissions will soon be published on the UCI website (www.uci.ch)

With the aim of achieving equality between men and women in the Olympic Games cycling events, the members of the new Management Committee approved the basic principles of a redefinition of the track programme at the Games, which will then need to go to the International Olympic Committee for further discussion.

Again as part of the UCI Road World Championships in Lugano, the President of the UCI will hold a press conference at 1.30pm in Lugano tomorrow (Saturday).
